BJP Corporator Launches 24x7 Monsoon Disaster Control Room in Malad West to Tackle Urban Flood Emergencies

BJP corporator Tajinder Singh Tiwana has launched a 24x7 monsoon disaster control room in Malad West, Mumbai, to tackle flooding, traffic disruption, and monsoon emergencies. Equipped with live surveillance and emergency tools, the system coordinates with civic agencies for rapid response across six flood-prone locations.

In a significant civic intervention aimed at strengthening monsoon response systems, Bharatiya Janata Party corporator Tajinder Singh Tiwana from Malad inaugurated a dedicated 24x7 monsoon disaster control room on Sunday. The facility has been designed to enable continuous monitoring and rapid response to urban flooding and other weather-related emergencies in Mumbai’s Malad West region.

The control room, located near Maharana Pratap Garden beneath the Malad Link Road Metro Station, has been established to address critical incidents including waterlogging, traffic congestion, fallen trees, electrical short circuits, and other monsoon-related disruptions. The initiative integrates live surveillance and on-ground coordination mechanisms with multiple civic agencies.

Tiwana stated that the concept originated around 2021, during the tenure of his mother as the local corporator. He recalled personally rescuing an elderly resident during severe flooding in the Ram Nagar slum settlement within his ward. He further explained that a drainage channel passing through the area had worsened the flooding situation during heavy rainfall.

According to Tiwana, conventional civic response systems often become overstretched during intense rainfall events, leading to delays in emergency deployment. He said that by the time official teams reach affected locations, conditions frequently escalate beyond control, prompting him to establish an independent response unit.

As part of the initiative, Tiwana is funding a team of labourers from his personal resources. These personnel have been deployed on a 24-hour basis to ensure immediate response during extreme weather conditions, including nighttime emergencies. The team has been equipped with drainage cleaning tools, tree-cutting equipment, and inflatable flotation devices to assist in rescue and clearance operations.

In addition, Wi-Fi-enabled surveillance cameras have been installed at six flood-prone locations across the ward. These cameras provide real-time monitoring, enabling early detection of developing situations and faster coordination with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, Fire Brigade, Police, Disaster Management authorities, and the Electricity Department.

Tiwana emphasized that traditional response systems alone are insufficient to manage modern urban infrastructure challenges. He noted that technology-driven surveillance and coordination can significantly reduce the time gap between incident reporting and response initiation, thereby improving overall disaster management efficiency.

The initiative marks a localized but structured attempt to enhance monsoon preparedness through private funding, real-time monitoring, and inter-agency coordination in one of Mumbai’s most flood-prone suburban zones.
